Small, lightweight sonar

The AN/SQS-62 Variable Depth Sonar, or VDS, is a modular, towed sonar that speeds detection, discrimination and engagement of undersea threats.

It can detect and localize submarines, unmanned underwater vehicles and other underwater objects. This information may be sent to MH-60R Seahawk helicopters or P-8 Poseidon maritime aircraft, which can deploy MK 54 lightweight torpedoes – a true end-to-end capability for littoral combat ships and future frigates.

The AN/SQS-62 is easy to deploy and offers greater maneuverability, eliminating multi-tow entanglement.

Mission support

The VDS will be installed on the U.S. Navy’s Freedom- and Independence-class of littoral combat ships and on the new Constellation-class frigates. It may be integrated on other ship classes including unmanned surface vessels, or USVs.

Nonstop innovation

The sonar’s smaller, lightweight design frees up space and manpower onboard ships. Raytheon Missiles & Defense continues to advance space-saving innovations for AN/SQS-62 to be installed on many of the world’s surface combatants — destroyers, frigates, corvettes and USVs.
