Raytheon Missiles & Defense Ku-Band radars achieve 1.5 million operational hours

Mobile, 360-degree radars provide critical sensing against drones, rockets, artillery and mortars

A Raytheon Missiles & Defense Ku-Band radar, known as KuRFS, is stationed in a field.

The Ku-band Radio Frequency System can cue defensive weapons and be set up within 30 minutes, either in a fixed location or on a vehicle.

TUCSON, Ariz., May 12, 2020 – Raytheon Missiles & Defense, a Raytheon Technologies business, announced that its Ku-Band Radio Frequency System, or KuRFS, and the Ku720 radar completed 1.5 million operational hours on the battlefield providing critical detect, discriminate, and intercept capabilities for the U.S. Army.

“KuRFS addresses an urgent operational need by drastically reducing the number of false alarms for incoming threats and giving soldiers a clear operational picture,” said Tom Laliberty, vice president of Land Warfare & Air Defense at Raytheon Missiles & Defense business. “Soldiers now know exactly what is approaching and have enough time to take cover while choosing the most appropriate counter effect to respond.”

Advanced electronically scanned array, persistent 360-degree radars, like KuRFS and Ku720, fill a unique capability gap for the U.S. Army. The radars sense emerging threats – including unmanned aerial systems, rockets, artillery, and mortars – at a greater distance than other battlefield sensors. The Ku720 radar is designed for highly mobile operations and is a scaled version of the larger KuRFS radar designed for fixed or transportable installations.

By operating in Ku-Band, the radars provide precise discrimination that enables categorization of airborne threats. Using a unique model for rapid development allows Raytheon Missiles & Defense to take feedback from operators in the field and quickly enhance the radar to improve its performance, which is critical in the current landscape against quickly advancing UAS threats.

Depending on the threat scenario, KuRFS pairs with Raytheon Missiles & Defense’s Coyote, High Energy Laser, Land-Based Phalanx Weapon system, 50-caliber guns, and 30 mm guns.
